14 Jun 2006I am doing a brief study on something I have noticed in a couple of sites running Windows 2000 Server and IIS/5.0, most notably with server-based SSL in place. In order to verify my findings, I need a larger subset of sites/servers to gather data from.
If you have such a site, please leave me a [...]

27 Apr 2006As many of you know, I inherited an old, very well-used T-Mobile Treo 600 a couple of weeks ago. Well, I have become acutely aware of people who have them, much like suddenly noticing pregnant women when your wife is pregnant.
Today, I am on-site at a large client in the Philadelphia area, and the office [...]

24 Apr 2006I installed GIMP for Windows this morning, along with the GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment (Version 2.8.9). As soon as I did that, GAIM went crazy. No more AIM, no more MSN, no more Gtalk.
The lightbulb just went on a few minutes ago, and I downgraded to GTK+ 2 (Version 2.6.10). Bingo! Everything works again.
Just a [...]

22 Apr 2006I remember now why I got out of the hardware support business.
I am converting Samantha’s old desktop into a computer for the boys. It took me nearly two hours to get it to boot properly. Then it hung trying to install Windows XP. So back to Windows 2000 Pro.
That appears to be working. Once I [...]
It took 3 calls, 6 people, and 90 minutes to resolve the problem with Samantha’s new Dimension 3100.
And what was the fix? A secret squirrel hotfix for Media Center.
Still wouldn’t buy another Dell.

I want one.

I hate Windows.
Linux Desktops make me nuts.
And Dell…don’t take me there.

10 Nov 2005Ubuntu, oh how I wish I understood you!
My understanding of why people prefer Windows and OSX is cemented. Evolution keeps crashing, and the wireless card, which worked perfectly at the office, can’t see my WRT54G.
Sorry Linux, until you can make it JUST FREAKING WORK, you are sent back to /dev/null.
I don’t have time to play; [...]

25 Aug 2005Ok, I will admit to using MSIE for one thing: Outlook Web Access.
I am at a hotel in Minneapolis where
I have to pay $9.95/day for wireless access
They block my VPN access to the Exchange server
So, I fire up MSIE and start getting weird errors. And other things go wrong when new windows get opened.
Looks like [...]

28 Jun 2005I hate running Windows.
I hate that the firewall app that I have run for years has suddenly decided to go and melt down into a giant puddle of goo, taking the CPU with it.
About two weeks ago, ZoneLabs released a broken update for their ZoneAlarm product.
Whoops! I did it again!
Yesterday, my Dell laptop slowed to [...]

15 Jun 2005Remember my post on Multiple OSs on Intel Macs?
Well, guess eWeek has figured it out! [here]
