From my IPV4 database, here are the the Registrar and Country statistics as of April 10 2009.

Since the last update, ARIN has crossed the 1.6B IPV4 address boundary, adding nearly 5M IPV4 Addresses. APNIC matched this growth by adding an additional 5M new addresses of its own.

As China’s Internet growth continues, the number of addresses assigned to ISPs in that nation will continue to grow. However, it is unlikely that China will equal or exceed the US mainly due to the movement to mobile devices, which will be managed using private IP space rather than public IPs.

On a daily basis, I update the Geographic IP database that I created many years ago. Although not as powerful as some of the commercially available Geographic databases, it has more than served my purposes over the years.

One of the benefits of collecting this data is being able to extract substantial metrics on the distribution of IPV4 addresses. This post is the latest in a series of descriptions of the distribution of addresses at the moment.

Here are the Registrar Stats for IPV4 addresses as of March 14 2009.

The ARIN IPV4 address space (which includes the US) is still the largest by far, with nearly 3 times the allocated IPV4 addresses of the two next largest registrars, RIPE and APNIC. The dominance of the US is even more noticeable in the IPV4 addresses by Country table.

Belying its growing importance on the Internet stage, China has grown from fourth place in the first of these analyses to second place in this study. However, it still has a long way to go before it catches up with the US.

An interesting concept that comes out of this data is that China is making do with substantially fewer public IPV4 addresses than the US is. This means that they have wholeheartedly embraced IPV6 (unlikely) or are using the private IP space for most communications.

Recently there was an outage at a hit-tracking vendor I was using to track the hits on my externally hosted blog, leaving me with a gap in my visitor data several hours long. While this was an inconvenience for me, I realized that this could be mission critical failure to an online business reliant on this data.

To resolve this, I used the PHP HTTP environment variables and the built-in function for converting IP addresses to IP numbers to create my own hit-tracker. It is a rudimentary tracking tool, but it provides me with the basic information I need to track visitors.

To begin, I wrote a simple PHP script to insert tracking data into a MySQL database. How do you do that? You use the gd features in PHP to draw an image, and insert the data into the database.

It’s done. I can now log any request I want using this embedded tracker.

Data should begin flowing to your database immediately. This sample snippet of code will allow you to pull data for a selected day and list each individual hit.

And that’s it. A few lines of code and you’re done. With a little tweaking, you can integrate the IP number data with a number of Geographic IP databases available for purchase to track by country and ISP, and using graphics applications for PHP, you can add graphs.

For my own purposes, this is an extension of the Geographic IP database I created a number of years ago. This application extracts IP address information from the five IP registrars, and inserts it into a database. Using the log data collected by the tracking bug above and the lookup capabilities of the Geographic IP database, I can quickly track which countries and ISP drive the most visitors to my site, and use this for general interest purposes, as well as the ability to isolate any malicious visitors to the site.

My system has a daily job to collect and aggregate the IP Blocks distributed by the five registrars into a single database, and then provide high-level WHOIS information for this data. If you want to try this yourself, the interface here.

On an extremely irregular basis, I aggregate the statistics from this data, and present it to the masses for the examination. I might actually automate this data someday!

So, for August 2007 (as of August 21, 2007), here are the aggregated IP distribution statistics broken down by registrar and country.

Starting with the country data, I figured that a sane cutoff for values would be 1,000,000 IP addresses. The list here is mostly unchanged, except for the addition of the European Union (EU). The EU is a recent addition, as it was not listed in the Country Code lookup table I had been using, and had to be added manually on August 20, 2007.

I made the attempt. No one can fault me for that. However, I was defeated by the twisted, anarchic madness that is the ARIN database.

A step back: I was considering refining the GrabIP database to more accurately reflect the true countries where IPs are used.

APNIC, LACNIC and AFRINIC are all sanely managed. Countries and IP blocks are accurately mapped. RIPE gets a little messier, but there is no real problem with it. Just have to watch out for the blocks tagged as EU instead of their host countries.

ARIN is complete madness. As the only IP registrar on the block for a long time, there are a number of archaic nooks and crannies to watch for. Like this gem: 65.165.84.11.

However, when I originally started this project 2 years ago, some of the blocks for Iceland were listed as ARIN. Now, all of Iceland’s blocks are in the RIPE database.

Hopefully in the next year, the registries can get the counrty assignment mess sorted out.
