Google Chrome: One thing we do know… (HTTP Pipelining)

September 2nd, 2008 by smp | Comments | Filed in Technology, Web Performance, WebPerformance.Org, Work

As a Web performance consultant, I view the release of Google Chrome with slightly different eyes than many. And one of the items that I look for is how the browser will affect performance, especially perceived performance on the end-user desktop.

One thing I have been able to determine is that the use of WebKit will effectively rule out (to the best of my knowledge) the availability of HTTP Pipelining in the browser.

HTTP Pipelining is the ability, defined in RFC 2616, to request multiple HTTP objects simultaneously across an open TCP connection, and then handle their downloads using the features built into the HTTP/1.1 specifications.

I had an Apple employee in a class I taught a few months back confirm that Safari (which is built on WebKit) cannot use HTTP Pipeling for reason that are known only to the OS and TCP stack developers at Apple.

Now, if the team at Google has found a way to circumvent this problem, I will be impressed.

Maine: What did you do with your Saturday afternoon?

May 19th, 2007 by smp | Comments | Filed in Life

I spent mine helping to bottle 65 cases of custom peach wine up here at the Sweetgrass Farm Winery. Keith and Constance are having a local open house tomorrow, and the doors open wide on Memorial Day Weekend.

They have apple and peach wine, and blueberry gin.

And the peach wine? Yummmmmm.

The Size of Storage

September 18th, 2006 by smp | Comments | Filed in Life, Technology

Today, I took an inventory of the portable storage solutions I have with me at all times.

The Size of Storage

On the bottom, a Maxtor OneTouch III Mini Edition at 100GB. In the middle, an 8GB Zen Microphoto. On to, a mostly useless iPod Shuffle that I use as a thumbdrive.

The top two are provided for context. I also purchased a 300GB Maxtor OneTouch III that I use for my media files.

Based on it’s size, the Maxtor Mini must use a standard 100GB laptop drive in a sleek aluminum housing. So far, It’s a dream. Slides into my bag, acts as a backup, and stores larger media files for when I’m on the road.

But the whole idea that I can slip nearly 110GB of storage into my pack is insane. And next year, this will be old school.

Mac Switching: Obviously, I haven’t whined enough…

April 27th, 2006 by smp | Comments | Filed in Life, Notebook Lust, RANTING, Technology

Stefan of the Help me become a switcher blog has raised nearly $1000 toward getting himself a Powerbook.

Obviously I am just not motivated enough, cause I have been begging for donations to get one for over a year; so far I can afford a new Apple sticker for my Moleskine.

Stefan, I applaud your gumption…and success!

Three Apple vets form a company with no product and no strategy.

They go public and make $30M. [here]

How do I get a piece of this action?

I got to touch a MacBookPro today.

I have since cleaned up the drool.

Wow.

Too bad I will never own one.

Dear Mr. Jobs: WTF where you thinking with this one?

February 28th, 2006 by smp | Comments | Filed in RANTING

Steve, what the hell is this?

Problems with the iPod WiFi
  • big
  • cumbersome
  • clumsy
  • not environmentally friendly (no rechargeable batteries?)
  • And it’s been done. There must be a dozen docks that let people plug iPods into their stereos

The iPod WIFI would have been a more interesting product announcement.

This one won’t sell many, except to the MacAddicts, or to the Apple museum of broken dreams.
