London: Skype Rocks!

leave a comment »

I just had a friendly chat with the American Express Account Security group. My card got flagged for unusual activity (“Why are charges from London appearing?”), and they sent me an e-mail.

I fired up Skype, called the US toll-free number and dealt with it in 2 minutes.

Have I mentioned that Skype rocks?

London: All your iced lattes belong to us

leave a comment »

I am in a Starbucks on Great Portland Street in London, using the high speed, as the high speed at the hotel is out.

I am remarkably un-jetlagged from the flight. And there is a certain comfort in Starbucks. Doesn’t matter you are, you’re there.

London, Ho!

leave a comment »

I fly to London on the red-eye, leaving Boston at 21:00 EDT. I land at Heathrow at about 08:30 BST, which means that if I time my sleep right, I should not even notice the jet lag.

Looks like a rainy weekend in the city, but I do plan to get out and see a few things.

Blog more after I land.

GrabPERF: Domain issues

leave a comment »

If you try to access GrabPERF via http://www.grabperf.com/ or http://www.grabperf.net/, you will have noticed that you can’t reach the Web server.

The domains are being transferred to a new registrar, and the authoritative servers have not yet been set up. Just use http://www.grabperf.org/ for the next few days.

Sorry.

Got a screenshot of this before it goes away.

A special bed -- May 11, 2006

I think this qualifies as a classic Craigslist purchase.

The Head Lemur has posted a car for sale on hist site. [here]

I can hear the soundtrack to the early 70′s crank up on the 8-track machine in this pre-shortage gas inhaler.

This story would be funny, if it didn’t happened to be my youngest son’s birthday.

GrabPERF: Embarassing, but true — Service Outage

leave a comment »

Ok, looks like the GrabPERF server was unreachable from 00:36 GMT until 01:24 GMT (20:36 EST – 21:24 EST).

This is very embarassing, as I am the one who is usually calling out folks for outages.

I will be checking with my hosting team to see what the root cause was.

Excuse me while I decide what to do about the teeth marks in my butt.

UPDATE: Just heard from my hosting provider that there was a planned outage last night. Sorry folks.

IE7 Re-installed, and some thoughts

leave a comment »

With some help from the IE7 team, I got IE7 installed. Turns out that there is a conflict between Microsoft (IE7 Beta2) and Google (Desktop Version 2). The Web history indexing performed by Google Desktop somehow conflicts with the way that IE7 Beta 2 handles Web history.

Now that it’s installed I want to try it out. But so far, nothing about it rocks my world. I am sure that the IE7 team could give me an amazing tour, but it isn’t a workspace for me. Firefox is more than “just” a browser. I work in Firefox. And IE7 doesn’t feel like a workspace platform.

I will continue to try it out for a couple of weeks. Maybe I will find the killer app for it.
